Understanding Absinthe Proof

2009/08/21 · by admin ·

Because of it’s legalization in the USA and other nations Absinthe has become popular once again among the people. Many young people are trying it for the first time and knocking it back without any consideration of its alcohol content. Learning about Absinthe proof?

The preparation of Absinthe is done from distilling alcohol with a blend of herbs including wormwood (artemisia absinthium), fennel and aniseed. It is commonly known as the Green Fairy, La Fee Verte, because of the characteristic emerald green coloring of classic verte styles of Absinthe.

There is the Ritual to mix Absinthe with iced water before drinking it. You have to drip the water over a sugar lump on a slotted spoon and into the Absinthe which causes the Absinthe to louche – a lovely effect.

As Absinthe contained wormwood so it was restricted in the early 1900s. Dr Valentin Magnan tested worwmood on guinea pigs in 1845 and found that a guinea pig given wormwood oilhad convulsions, whereas, a guinea pig given alcohol just got drunk. Absinthe was found to be much more harmful than other spirits by the testing done by Magnan on the thujone content in it. He and others in the medical profession were convinced that thujone was psychoactive and caused psychedelic effects. Absinthe was therefore banned.

Due to similarities in the structures of a thujone molecule and THC from the drug cannabis they acted in a same manner.

All these claims have been proved to be unreal. There is no resemblance between thujone and THC. Experiments show that the amount of thujone content in Absinthes is not enough to harm anyone. Before being affected by thujone one will die due to alcohol poisoning when taking Absinthe in large amount!

One should drink Absinthe in balanced amount as it will get him drunk quite quickly.
